Trip at Gagosian - Derrick Adams "Situation Comedy"

During my visit to Gagosian to see Derrick Adams: Situation Comedy, I was deeply inspired by how Adams uses collage, colour, and domestic scenes to reframe Black joy, leisure, and everyday life. His bold visual language challenges stereotypical representations and instead celebrates nuanced, affirming narratives of Black identity.

This approach directly connects to my own practice, which focuses on designing spaces that honour the emotional and cultural realities of marginalised communities. Adams’ use of the home as both a site of performance and resistance made me reflect on how interior design can hold memory, joy, and visibility.

The exhibition also reinforced my interest in layered storytelling and the importance of representing lived experiences through space, material, and aesthetic choices.
